Helfer was born in the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada in Canada, the children of Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer. Her parents are from German, English, Swedish and Norwegian descent. She studied at William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler, Alberta. She had three sisters. Tammy, Tara, and Trena as well as her worked on the family farm. A modeling agency scout discovered Helfer aged 17 while she was standing in line to see a film.
